“FACES has helped me grow into the person I am today and has really helped me figure out what I want to do in my future in the medical field. There are so many things that you get to see and experience that you wouldn’t be able to in other internships. FACES has opened up so many doors for me and has really helped me succeed in achieving my goals. I’ve had the opportunity to be exposed to healthcare in a variety of ways, which has changed my perspective on life and I owe that all to FACES and to all the people behind it.”

FACES Students Volunteer at Rotary Brunch
FACES students spent their Sunday giving back to their community at the Hayward Rotary Club’s annual fundraiser brunch. The Hayward Rotary Club has generously supported the FACES for the Future Program since its inception at St. Rose Hospital in 2007. Thank you to the Rotarians for their support, and to the FACES students for demonstrating their leadership and commitment to the community.
FACES Hayward Collaborates with Life Chiropractic College West
The FACES for the Future Program has partnered with nearby academic institution, Life Chiropractic College West (LCCW), to create the FACES Anatomy Certificate Program (FACP). FACP is a program developed to provide FACES scholars with a hands-on approach to learning. Students in the program have the opportunity to explore health and human anatomy through case studies, prosections, and exposure to human cadavers. FACP is a five-session program that meets once a month on Saturday’s and those students who complete the program are awarded a Certificate of Completion.
Paid Summer Internships for FACES Students though Youth Enrichment Services
Through collaboration with Youth Enrichment Services (YES), a local program in Hayward that provides educational and employment opportunities to eligible youth, FACES scholars have been given the opportunity to obtain a paid summer internship. Students who are enrolled with YES will attend professional development workshops focusing on a variety of topics such as financial literacy, interview skills, and resume building. Those who attend and complete all required workshops are then eligible to continue their internships at St. Rose Hospital while being paid for their hours on campus.
FACES Students Explore Global Health in Washington D.C.
Six FACES Hayward Scholars were selected to take part in a week-long event, the Global Health Youth Summit (GHYS), which focuses on inspiring the next generation of global health professionals. Through a partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health Fellows Program, FACES scholars will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, mentorship, and career exploration in Washington D.C. alongside government officials in the summer. The goal of GHYS is to create sustainable pathways for high school students who are interested in impacting health on a global scale.
Program Overview
FACES for the Future at St. Rose Hospital (FFSR) is a 2-year healthcare internship and leadership development program for high school juniors and seniors. The FACES Program provides educational and career pathways to motivated and resilient youth who are struggling to survive challenging circumstances. Through the program, FACES students receive:
- Health Careers Exploration
- Academic Support and Enrichment
- Wellness Support & Psycho-Social Intervention
- Youth Leadership Development
A Brief Background
The FACES for the Future Program was founded in 2000 at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland, where it quickly became a best practice model for healthcare career pipeline programs serving underrepresented, minority youth at the high school level.
FACES for the Future at St. Rose Hospital (FFSR) began in 2007. The program is offered through a partnership with Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (EAROP), a job training and workplace preparation program for students of Southern Alameda County. Since 2007, FFSR has served more than 125 students. With the guidance and mentorship of the health care professionals at St. Rose Hospital, the teachers at EAROP, and the FACES staff, those students have gone on to enroll in colleges like Chabot College, CSU East Bay, CSU Los Angeles, San Francisco State University, and UC San Diego.
Now a project of the Public Health Institute, the FACES for the Future Coalition has program in Sacramento, San Diego, and El Centro, in addition to Hayward, and is working to replicate the program in other California communities.
FACES for the Future Coalition/Public Health Institute
The FACES for the Future Coalition is the extension of an effort that began in 2000 when the first FACES for the Future Program was established in Oakland, California. Now a project of the Public Health Institute in Oakland, the FACES for the Future Coalition aims to replicate the success of the original effort nationwide. The Coalition provides administrative and development support to all FACES Programs.
Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (EAROP)
All FACES for the Future Students at St. Rose Hospital enroll through the Medical Careers or First Responders courses at EAROP. At the EAROP, students prepare for internship, learning anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
La Familia Counseling Service (LFCS)
